I love to read but that was not always the case and I'm a girl. I remember being sent to the reading specialist in grade 2, and I remember the moment of pride I felt when I read my first book by myself. It was James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl and I was in grade 3. We know that reading means success in school so when I had my first son I valued how important it was to develop a love of reading from the very beginning. Books are everywhere in our house and every night it became a ritual to lie down with him in his bed and read a book to him. He loves having us read to him.
Fast forward, my son is now just about to finish grade one. In February we received his report card that indicated his reading level. I have never stressed about it all year but even when I saw that he was probably a half a year behind where he should be---the educator in me tried not to panic! And I didn't--at least I don't think I did but I did go out and try to find more books that would engage my son's interest. The readers that were being sent home were dull, boring and totally not engaging.
Enter in Fly Guy by Tedd Arnold. Basically, boy meets fly. Boy and Fly become friends. Adventure and hilarity ensure. My son's favorite so far is There's a Fly Guy in my Soup. When asked why, he responded "because it is funny when all the soup lands on everyone and then everyone jumps in the pool". I'm just glad we found books that interest him and engage him in the reading process.
I never thought that I could ever find a fly lovable and cute but I do after reading the Fly Guy series. And my son loves learning to read with Fly Guy.
Check out Tedd Arnold's website for more books and the Scholastic website for even more fun with Fly Guy.
