Treasure Thursday at the Library

Adalinc to Life

How does a parent compete with spray parks, bike riding, sand building and friends during the summer to encourage our little readers?

In the quiet moments between frenzied activity after another we started our first week with some new treasures from the library that I read aloud.  Book one was Shoe Shakes by Loris Lesynski illustrated by Michael Martchenko and How to Teach a Slug to Read by Susan Pearson illustrated by David Slonim.

Shoe Shakes by Loris Lesynski

We were drawn to Shoe Shakes by the illustration on the front cover.
My son asked "What are his feet doing?"
Mom:  "That is a good question we will have to read the book to find out."
Who doesn't love a mystery.

The lively and colourful illustrations match the energy of Lesynski's poems.  Imagine what happens when you ask your kids "What would happen if your shoes shook?"  All of the poems have something to do with feet, shoes or moving about.  As the book is full of energy this book works well as a way to get kids moving in the morning or if you need kids to have a brain break.

How to Teach a Slug to Read by Susan Pearson

A cute and clever story about the tips a mother slug uses to teach her little slug to read.  There are ten tips such as tip #2 find books your little slug finds interesting and tip #9 read your slugs favorite poems.  Some of slugs favorites are The Snail in the Hat, The Pokey Little Slug and To Where the Wild Slugs are.  Tip #10, being what I think is the most important of all when working with any new readers young or old, be patient.

Have you found any treasures at your library?  I would love to hear about them.

Cheers,
Bonnie
