Summary

Once there was a very special chameleon... The Colourblind Chameleon is the debut title from up and coming author/illustrator duo Laura Kantor and Sarah Ray. This is a colourful and imaginative tale of a chameleon who doesn't fit in with the rest. He realises that it's not just good to be different... it's a lot more fun! Delight in the rhyming verses, vibrant colours and hilarious drawings as you are taken on a wonderful journey with a special little chameleon (wearing fabulous pants).

Review (Me and my kids)

You just know there is going to be some kind of trouble with a title called The Colourblind Chameleon the first picture book by Laura Kantor and Sarah Ray.  My children couldn't help but be curious about this poor chameleon who changes to odd colours and patternsI found the bold, vivid illustrations very appealing and great for practicing colours with my three old daughter.  My five year old son was very interested in chameleons and why they change colour and so the book opened up a discussion about how some animals protect themselves from their predators.  Then of course he asked about predators which then led us to talk about the Jack Rabbits that live in our neighbourhood and how they change from a brown colour in the summer to white in the winter.  We also had a discussion about what it means to be colourblind.  Very problematic for a chameleon.

The Colourblind Chameleon also touches on the topic of acceptance of oneself which I find is a great topic of discussion amongst early elementary aged children.  My seven year old son and I discussed how the chameleon was born that way and how he didn't feel accepted so he left to find a new place where he would fit in better.  And the chameleon did.  He found a vibrant array of colours and patterns that would allow him to be himself and he wouldn't have to change to fit in.  A great message!

The Colourblind Chameleon appealed to all three of children aged 3, 5 and 7.  But my five old son insisted I add that his favourite part was at the end with the underwear on the chameleon's head.  Of course, five year old boy underwear humour.  Oh, and they wanted more adventures with the clothes.

*Disclosure:  I was given a copy of the story for free to review and provide my honest opinion.  All opinions expressed are my own or those related to me by my children who help me review the books.
