Super Cool Super Fun
What you will find in this book in no particular order: a baseball, a raccoon, mystery, siblings, special powers, friends, and neon green bird poop. Yup, neon green bird poop. That is what drew us into this book. I am always on the look out for great reads for my children and now that my eldest son, Mr. Black Licorice is starting to dive into chapter books, I hoped this one would capture his interest. Interest is half the battle. Josh and the Gumshoe News Crew did not disappoint. As I said, even I was hooked with the opening paragraph with neon green bird poop. This book is the fifth in a series of books called the Wunderkind Family Series and even though we had never read any of the previous books the opening chapter gave us enough back ground information that we could easily read this book on its own. This story is about Josh Wunderkind who is one of four children in the Wunderkind family and the only one who didn't have a special power revealed to him yet. We learn as he does of his superpower, how he begins to use and control his powers and how his brother, sister and two friends form a mystery solving news crew for the neighbour. In the end solving their first mystery.
There are some black and white illustrations throughout the book and they are cute and simple. My son liked them. Not perhaps necessary for an adult but for early readers just beginning chapter books I think I nice addition. From my adult perspective, I found the characters appealing in their nature as a group of ten year olds. For example: when the crew was doing their training exercises their goal was to find a bag of jellybeans, or search for candy. And when they found it, they ate it.
This book was easy to enjoy and brought back many memories of my own childhood and my enjoyment of Nancy Drew mysteries. We will be looking out for more Wunderkind family adventures.
