Aha! Now I know what happens to all the socks that go missing after the wash. I always thought they got up and walked away but they go on fantastic adventures in different times and places through the portal of the washing machine. This is the premise of the book The Sockkids meet Lincoln written by Michael John Sullivan and Susan Petrone which will take you on a whooshing ride back in time when a tube sock called Stretch gets to be a part of Lincoln's famous Gettysburg Address and meets Meade a sock from the era.
As a former history teacher, I thought this book was a perfect way to introduce young children to an important historical figure and a time period. My son (7 years old) ended up asking a lot questions such as what were 'fuzzies', why was the lady hand washing the socks and of course why was Lincoln so important? My son loved the idea of the washing machine being a portal. He said "It makes everything mysterious as you don't know where the sock will end up." He was ready for me to read him the next adventure.
We loved reading the book from the point of view of the socks and the illustrations to match it. Stretch looking way up from the foot of Abraham Lincoln and asking "Why is he special?' The perspective aids in the feeling of his importance. The facial expressions of the socks are simple yet help tell the story. For instance when Meade and Stretch take a carriage ride. Meade's face shows one of enjoyment for the ride while Stretch's face showed he was scared with his new experience. The illustrations themselves are an array of vibrant colors.
I have to admit I was drawn to this book as I have a son named Lincoln, and one of my favorite quotes of all time is from Lincoln. "And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It is the life in your years." Abraham Lincoln

MICHAEL JOHN SULLIVAN
Michael John Sullivan is the creator of the SockKids. Constantly searching for his socks, he wondered whether the missing foot comforters had found another pair of feet to warm. Before his interest in socks, Sullivan started writing his first novel while homeless, riding a NYC subway train at night. Sullivan returned to his subway notes in 2007 and began writing Necessary Heartbreak: A Novel of Faith and Forgiveness (Simon & Schuster, Gallery Books imprint). Library Journal named Necessary Heartbreak one of the year’s best in 2010. His second novel, Everybody’s Daughter (Fiction Studio Books, 2012) was named one of the best books of 2012 by TheExaminer.com. Sullivan has written articles about the plight of homelessness for CNN.com, The Washington Post.com, Beliefnet.com, the Huffington Post, and America Online’s Patch.com service.
SUSAN PETRONE
Susan Petrone’s short fiction has been published by Glimmer Train, Featherproof Books, The Cleveland Review, Muse, Conclave, and Whiskey Island. Her first novel, A Body at Rest, was published in 2009 (Drinian Press). Her short story, Monster Jones Wants to Creep You Out (Conclave,2010) was nominated for a 2011 Pushcart Prize.
